Community Champions create a lasting legacy by investing in our city

Ottawa – The City of Ottawa’s Community Champions program officially launched today, providing businesses, community groups and public-spirited individuals with an opportunity to become community partners by sponsoring City programs, services and facilities.

“This new sponsorship program is a great way for our community leaders and entrepreneurs to get involved and give back to our city,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “It is also a win for Ottawa residents by reducing costs and helping to keep taxes under control.”

Mayor’s Remarks: Federation of Citizens Associations of Ottawa 25th Anniversary AGM

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. 

It’s my pleasure to be here today at the Federation of Citizens Associations of Ottawa annual general meeting to talk directly with individuals who are actively taking an interest in civic affairs. 

I would like to thank Graeme Roderick, President of the FCA, for having me. 

And I want to take a moment to offer you all a very special congratulations on this your 25th Anniversary AGM.

Twenty-five years of collective service to our community is an achievement that you should all be very proud to attain.

City’s 2011 financial statements confirm strong position

Ottawa - The 2011 City of Ottawa Consolidated Financial Statements will be considered by the Audit Sub-Committee on May 24, by the Finance and Economic Development Committee on June 5, and by City Council on June 13.

Documents released today in advance of those meetings show the City is in a strong financial position that includes higher cash balances, preservation of reserves, manageable debt and a higher accumulated surplus. The City’s credit ratings have also been reconfirmed by Moody’s Investors Service and by Standard and Poor’s.

City Solid Waste Contract Shows $600K Surplus in 2011

Ottawa – The partnership between the City of Ottawa and the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 503 continues to beat financial targets and resulted in a $600,582 operating surplus in 2011 for its solid waste collection operations.

“We continue to be proud of the savings achieved for taxpayers through the hard work of the City and its labour union partners,” Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said. “We value the strong working relationship we have with CUPE and look forward to the continued success of the in-house solid waste collection group.”

Public Works Department implements $1 million in savings

Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and Steve Kanellakos, Deputy City Manager of City Operations, along with CUPE 503 President, Brian Madden, and CIPP Executive Director, Sheila Stanislawski, are recognizing staff from the Public Works Department for their participation in ServiceOttawa’s Service Improvement Initiative.
